Harper’s Ferry.Continued from tin', page.bur 12, 1802, Gen. A. 1*. Hill and Jackson began the siege of Harper's Ferry, After a most inglorious defence it was surrendered by General Miles. It is said by the people at Harper’s Ferry that Miles was killed by one of his own batteries—the men being angered at tl:c cowardly surrender. After the battle of Antietam it was garrisoned by General McClellan until the second invasion of the North by General I.eo in June, 1803. Then the Confederates regained possession. When Lee retreated a second time the Federals took the town again and held it for a year. July 4, lSdi, the Federals were driven out again by a portion of General Early’s forces. After tho failure of the Confederates to capture Washington and their retreat, tho Federals obtained possession and held it uninterruptedly until tho close of the war.It is a singular fact that tho lirst man killed by John Brown’s party was a negro, and thatthe first who lost his life at Harper's Ferry, at tho hands of tho Union army, was a warm friend of the Government. An idea may bo formed of the war experiences of Harper’s Ferry from the fact that the railroad bridge at the place was destroyed and rebuilt nine times from June, 18(51, to the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox.^ The town is well worth a visit and study. Excursions arc made frequently to the neighboring points of interest. lt;ne can boo many interesting objects and sights even though tho town is quiet. Good fishing can be had, and many a healthy walk. (hie of the favorite tramps is to the stone fort occupied by tho Federals during the war on the top of Maryland Heights. The view to be had from this lofty elevation is worth all the effort that it costs to reach it. Battling springs, with its clear, cool water, is a favorite haunt. Barge parties on the canal from Washington bring delightful acquaintances. The air is cool and bracing, and one feels invigorated for the rest and tramps about in this romantic and historic neighborhood. Antietam is easily reached from here by a drive over a well-kept turnpike, aud is worthy a visit.
