News-Examiner Will Even tually Occupy the Whole Ground Floor Space TATMAN REALTY CO. CONSUMMATES DEAL The Tatman Realty Company, a re cently organized corporation, last night consummated a deal ‘for the purchise of the Odd Fellows’ Build ing, on Central avenue, directly east of the Court House. The News Ex aminer will occupy a part of the building, within the next twelve months, and certain changes in the tenantry of the establishment will necessarily ensue. The trustees of Fayette Lodge, Nowel, J. O., o. F., who, act ing for it, closed the trans action with the sanction of the order as io whole, are James P. Halstead, William KE. Banks, Roscoe A. Dun kate, James R. Fowler and John W. Stewart. Their action was in asso ciation with Willian A. Smith, Noble Grand of the order. It is interesting to learn that the site of the building was purchased from J. M. McIntosh, as trustee for J. N. Huston, by the order, twenty: two years ago. Three years later the order, having cleared the lot of an aunteduted building which en cumbered it, erected the building concerned in the conveyance of yes terday. The Tatman Realty Company has FE. O W. Tatman, president and general manageer of the News-Examiner, as its president. Thus, the conclusion of the purchase was, in effect, a transaction between the News-Ex aminer and Fayette Lodge of Odd Fellows. The consideration of purchase has not been stated, but it is supposed to have been large, since it is known that the building is one of the best in the city, both as regards location and structure. It is of brick, with wn handsome frontage, forty-two and one-half feet wide, four stories, high and one-hundred, and nineteen feet deep. The whole structure is underiun by a basement and heat ed by a heavy furnace. On the first floor there are two separate business establishments, that on the north being the undertaking establishment of Charles Myers, who has been there since the erection of the build ing, in 1901. On the south side is the electrical shop of W. R. Cooper. On the second floor are the offices of the Prudential Insurance Com pany, and the National Loan Com pany, also the spacious auditorium known as Odd Fellows hall. The Church of Christ, Science, which is without an individual church in Connersville, occupies the third floor and holds regular services there. Above, occupying the entire fourth foor, are the quarters of Fayette Lodge of Odd Fellows. That power ful order has taken a three year leased on its own part of the build ing.Seying the expiration of that lease, and the immediate rights of the present tenants—all of them good and desirable ones—the plans of the purchaser are not revealed. Nevertheless, it is clearly under stood that the partition which now divides the Myers establishment from the Cooper store, on the first floor, is of a sort that can be de molished without impairment of the structure as a Whole and that the purchaser intends, without avoidable loss of time, to cast the two large ground, floor rooms into one and to mmove the News Examiner’s business and equipment into the doubled area. At the time of the consolidation of the News and the Examiner, it was stated that a new building, on the sight of the present offices, was in tended. That was the truth and the whole truth. But the News-Examin er, like so many others, found, upon investigation, that the cost of build ing was so unusually high, and the certainty of ‘swift construction o0 nearly impossible, that the purchase of a completed building, if that were possible, was, in every way, to be preferred. The Odd Fellows’ Build ing is peculiarly suited to the uses of the News-Examiner. The south half of the ground floor once housed the Daily Examiner. There is depth, but there is also light There is nearness to the Court House and the City Hall—advantages which no newspaper publisher could consist ently overlook, and there is, over head, a warren of space which, in the coming years, might be adapted to any probable degree of expan sion. Altogether, the purchase is one of consequence and expectation. A fuller explanation of the plans of the purchasing company may be forth coming; a very little later.
