Was it Not Justifiable?The criminal assault made by James Taylor, colored, upon the 11-year old daughter of Mr. Silcox, in our sister county of Kent, has thrown mother dark-shadow across tho homes not only of Kent but of this county as well. Following as it did so closely upon the horrible murder of Dr. Hill only a few weeks ago, upon the same soil and within a radius of a few miles of the same spot, and if possible, more hellish and deplorable than the crime which had just preceded, it was but a natural outcome for the lovers of home and society, in their eagerness to set their stamp of warn ng upon such inhuman and atrocious deeds, to rise up iu their uij^ht -and wrest the fiend from ♦ L*«r ’ ofthe law. and mete out to lr. lefetb* assudden, as the home he so ruthlessly in-vaded and the life he by his vile act ci*hcr ended with suffering or blasted for all coining years. While lynch law is to be deplored in a jhristian and civilized community such as ours, yet when we find the safeguards to life and home daringly invaded, innocent girlhood made the victim of such an outrage as • hv facts given in the press of the State prove, is it not say the least, necessary fr all lovers of right and defenders of home, without regird to color lines, to assert in unmistakable language, though it he in defiance of written 1 w, that human life shall be held sacred and the most untimely death awaits he who dares trample virtue under his feet?There’ is a law. though unwritten, that warrants and justifies the protection of all homes, even though it be necessary for the people to t ike matters in their own hands.
