PATENT NO. 49.V John Chessman, [a] of Kiquotn, geo x tleman, 200 acres adjoioiog the land of John Sipsey. Issued in 1624. Head rights (servants) : Thomas Fuller, Instant Power, Peter Dickinson and Cuthbert Brooks; all came from England in 1622 -NOT*.[a] John Cheesman (or Chisman, as the name is now spelt) was born 1597; came to Virginia, 1621; was justice of York, 1635; burgess for York, 1642 3 (when he had the rank of captain), and »as ap pointed to the Council, 1652, with rank of lieutenant colooel. He married Margaret , and returned to England before1661, as in tbat year its appears from the records of York county be was a resident of the parish of Saint Mary Magdalen, Bermondsea, Surrey. He died before 1678, as in that year there is mention of the York land of Colonel John Cheesman, deceased. In 1624 Thomas Cheesman and Edmund Cheesman (who was born 1602 and came to Virginia in 1623) were living with John Cheesman. Edmuud was his brother and it is probable Thomas was also. Edmund Cheesman was a justice of York, 1652, and died there in 1673, leaving by his wife, Mary : 1, Thomas; 2, Jane; 3, Mary. Thomas, the son, was probably the Lieutenant Thomas Cheesman, Junior, who was living in York, 1699, and the Captain Thomas Cheesman, who was vestryman of Charles River parish, York, 1708.Thomas Cheesman, the first mentioned, is believed to have been father of Major Edmund Cheesman, Junior, who was appointed a justice of York county, 1670; took an active part in Bacon’s rebellion, was captured, and died in prison. His brave wife tried to save his life by taking all blame for his part in the rebellion upon herself, but she was repelled by Governor Berkeley with terms of insult. This family with the name spelt variously Cheesman, Chiesman and Chisman, has sjnce been continuously resident in the lower counties of the Peninsula. Doctor Thomas Chisman, of York county, was a surgeon in the Virginia line in the Revolution, and died near Hampton about 1798, leaving one child, Lucy, who married Robert Tabb, of York county. Miles C. Chisman was appointed justice of York in 1810, and Thomas P. Chisman in 1839. John .Chisman lived in York in 1835. T. P. Chisman was member of House of Delegates from Elizabeth City and Warwick. 1845 and 1846. George W. Chisman, of York (afterwards Major Chisman), entered William and Mary, 1829; was appointed justice of Warwick 1884, and sheriff 1842 3. Lieutenant Chisman, Confederate States Army, of Elizabeth City, commanded a company from tbat county at the battle of Bethel, lgpi.
