Gen. La Fayette arrived at Nashville on the 4th inst. And was received with the most enthusiastic demonstrations of joy and gratitude. He left there on the 6th inst. in the steam boat Mechanic, for Louisville, which place he reached, in safety, on the 11th—not, however, without encountering one of those dangerous accidents, so common in the navigation of the western waters. The following article, from the National Intelligencer of yea-terday, gives the particulars. Whatever may be the regret, that the benefactor of our country should meet with so great a pecuniary loss, it ought to be more than overbalanced bv the cheering assurance that his valuable and beloved person has rcccivcd no injur}*.GENERAL I.AFATETTE.From the National Intelligencer.We are sorry to have to inform our readers that the good General has sustained, by an accident, a very serious loss of property, hut happily without personal injury. The accident is described in the following obliging letter, which we received by the last mail:Post Office, IVheelingy 19th May. GF.NTLr.MF.ss Believing vou to feel interested in the welfare of the “Nation’s Guest,” I hasten to inform you of a serious misfortune which befel him on his passage from Nashville to Louisville. The Steamboat Mechanic, which had been chartered to convey him to Nashville, and thence to Louisville, ran on a snag, about 150 miles below Louisville, and sunk in a few mi/i-The General and all the passen-. got safe to shore ; but, I am sorry t .form you, that his carriage* bag-, and papers, as well as that of the • r passengers, were lost, with the \cc4tioi» of five trunks. The sicani-at Paragon, with full freight for Orleans, passing down shortly after the accident, was hailed by her owner, Mr. Neilson, of Louisville, who happened to be a passenger in the Mechanic,when she struck. The Paragon rounded to, and brought the General and all the passengers to Louisville, where he ar-rived safe on the 1 Ith inst.By the arrival, this morning of the steamboat General Pike, in three days from Cincinatti, information was obtained that the General had left Louisville to visit Frankfort, Lexington, See. and is expected to be in Cincinatti, this day (19th) He intends coming to this place by water, where we expect him on Tuesday or Wednesday next.In haste, respectfully vours, RICHARD McCLURE.
