Vince Berry, Ryan Nehls qualify for state track meetBy Jeremy MayoRIVER NEWS SPORTS EDITORRICE LAKE — Two members of Rhinelander High School track team are making plans to be in La Crosse next weekend.Junior Vince Berry took the sectional title in boys’ pole vault with ease and junior Ryan Nehls made a late surge for t he third and final qualifying spot in the 100-meter dash Thursday during a WIAA Division I sectional at Dairy State Bank Stadium in Rice Lake. The Hodags capitalized on two of their four chances to make the WIAA state meet, which will be held May 31 and June 1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse. Nehls barely missed qualifying in the boys’ high jump and senior Taylor WLssbroecker missed out on a second consecutive stateappearance in the girls’ high jump.Berry only needed four vaults to clinch a berth in the state meet, and one more to win the sectional title on an afternoon in which a strong cross wind from the north made things difficult in the pole vault. Berry needed two vaults each at 12 feet, 6 inches and 13 feet, before nailing vaults at 13-3 and 13-9 on the first take. No one else bettered 13 feet Thursday, but Berry made it look easy.“I wouldn’t say it was (easy),” Berry said afterward. “We had a crosswind that everyone was struggling with, but still getting three inches under my PR (personal record) was pretty good for these conditions. I kind of had to run leaning right because the wind was pushing to the left.”See Sectionals, Page 4BRyan Nehls races to the finish line in the boys' 100-meter clash
