Caroline Langie Associated Press LOS ANGELES — A nurse who contended a butler and doctor murdered tobacco heiress Doris Duke was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing more than $400,000 of valuables from the legendary woman and five other people. Tammy Payette, 28, was al ready at the Los Angeles Munici pal Court in connection with a March 31 arrest for an alleged theft from another wealthy pa tient when she was arrested Wednesday. She is accused of stealing $439,000 in art, jewelry and cash from six people. Payette had been free on $20,000 bail until she was taken away in tears, pleading for her attorney to care for her three cats. She was being held on a new bail of $1 million. “I’m sure she was surprised. I regret they chose this avenue to arrest her when we were already appearing. She was crying and asked me to take care of her kit ties,’ said her attorney, Curt Livesay of Los Angeles. “She has three but one just had surgery overnight. She is not the consum mate criminal. She is a nice per son and she is a caring person.” Livesay said he would seek her release today or Friday, based on her own recognizance. “She’s a California licensed nurse. She’s been out on bail on this case for two months now and she should be released on her own recognizance,” Livesay said. The Los Angeles’ County Dis trict Attorney’s Office charged Payette with six counts of grand theft and two counts of alleged jewelry and art thefts between November 1993 and January 1995. The investigation was continu ing, authorities said. If convicted, Payette could get a maximum sentence of eight years and four months in prison.
