Oakes.—The call for preparedness proved so strong that the Kev. Fred A. Whitfield, Methodist minister of Oaken, S. I)., decided to abandon preaching for service in the navy. He applied at the Minneapolis recruiting olllce, was accepted, and is now on the way to the high seas. Mr. Whitfield kept his profession a secret until he was being examined.
