Tree found for sculpture---Preparations made for Iowa Falls monumentIf you felt the earth tremble just a little in Iowa Falls Tuesday morning, it was not because of an earthquake. It was just a 10 ton tree falling in the Rock Run Park. The tree, a cottonwood, will be used for an Indian sculpture to be done by Peter Toth. Toth is in the process of sculpting one monument in each of the 50 states and has chosen Iowa Falls as the site for the Iowa Indian monument. The sculptor is expected to arrive in Iowa Falls towards the end of this month to begin work on the sculpture. But there is a lot of work yet to be done before he arrives. Cutting down the tree itself was onlythe first step.Cooper’s Services helped cut down the tree, which took over three hours. Also on hand to help out were Glenn Carr and the city street department.“It was no easy task,” said Kraig Kasischke. “We had three large pieces of equipment there, and a lot of people. But when the tree fell, it fell right into the creek, so it took a lot more work to get it out of there.”Once the tree was retrieved out of the creek, it was moved from Rock Run Park, to the site where the sculpture will be located (one half block north of the Washington Avenue bridge onthe west side banks of the Iowa River). But before Toth starts on the sculpture, a number of other things have to be done. A cement pedestal must be poured, and the log will have to be lifted into place on the pedestal with a crane. The log will then have to beleveled and squared off.The monument will take approximately twomonths to complete.
