Great Future Predicted For Pretty Village On The “Banks Of Ohio River”In the early days, when the vast northwest territory ws being developed by a sturdy band of pioneers, the villa go of Wheelers-bm*g was conceived and founded. Located in the heart of Porter township, this sumII community soon became alive with the activities of the settlers.ft whs founded in the spring of 1820 and the village was first given the name of “Concord/1 perhaps in honor of lhal staid old town in New England, where the patriots of 177G made their first gallant stand against England.June 15, 1S24, fourteen acres were sub-divided by Rev. Daniel Young and. brother, John Young, ft was surveyed and platted by KarmieJ Cole. Then two years after the survey was made, the name was changed to ‘Wheelersbnrg in honor of Major Porter Wheeler, an early settler, a noted Indian fighter and a soldier of the war of 1812. Porter township, which was established by resolution December 6, 1514, was also named after this settler.In 1822, Daniel and John Young erected a cotton factory at the corner' of Broadway and Center streets, which was operated until 1835 when it was sold to Edward Cranston. This was the first factory in the village.John Young w'as the first and only postmaster of Concord and was succeeded by Samuel Could, October, 1828, when the village became known as Wheelcrsburg.The first school house was built in 1822 and John Young was the first teacher.Wheclcrsburg of today—a vil-;lage. of several hundred people— is the thriving center of a rich agricultural and dairy produce country. Its rolling mesas, flanked by wooded hills through which winds tin? broad bosom of the Ohio presents truly a beautiful scene.It is a village of suburban homes. Thu improved highways; the new traction line and splendid train service, give the resi-j dents the advantage of varied | Transportation.Then too, the natural environments of the village are .such that unlimited sites for new industries j can be. obtained. It is character-j ized by members of the local i Board of Trade as having “the finest manufacturing sites in the world.”As predicted by the business men of the Portsmouth-Kiinling-ton zone, this territory is ileslined to become the greatest industrial center in the United States. Then when this time comes and the contemplated improvements on the waterways tapping the resources of the Great Lakes are completed, Wheelcrsburg will be required to furnish the sites for these industries.Not, only is Wheelersburg an agricultural center buL it is I he home of new additions. Under the ;masterful touch of the new era of prosperity, its boundaries are being extended by lenps and bounds.New homes are being erected on sub-divisions which have been opened around and about and it is believer] that the opening of I he new Traction line will put new impetus to this movement for suburban homes.
