PRESENT BENEFITTO BE GIVEN AT THE ACADEMY TUESDAY, MAY 28thPOP EYE, SUM MANHarry Welch, The Original Pop Eye of Screen And Radio, To Appear In Person — Performance Benefit of The Academy Band.Through the cooperation of J. Wellington Jones of Albany, N. Y., a former Lowville boy and a past New York State Kiwanis governor, the Ki-wanis Clulb of Lowville will sponsor the presentation of “Pap Eye the Sailor Man, with Harry Foster Welch in person, in a benefit performance for the Lowville Free Academy band, next Tuesday evening, May 28th.Mr. Welch, who is the original and the only real “Pop Eye is nationally known as “the man with a million voices”. He takes the parts of all the characters seen in the Pop Eye comic strips, including Pluto, Olive Oil, Wimpy and Sweet Pea. In addition he conducts an invisible orchestra and with his voice plays the parts of all the instruments. He also sings like ■Lawrence Tiihbet.Harry. Foster Welch is nationally recognized as one of the highest class and most popular comedian entertainers appearing on the stage or screen.Mr. Welch was recently on the same program as Lily Pons at an entertainment for a wealthy Long Island family. The elderly lady of the family (during Lily Pon’s recital) 'banged her cane and yelled “Take that screeching woman out of here; I cannot stand it. Pop Eye was warned that he might expect anything as he wras next on the program. Before he was through he had the elderly lady trying to sing “I’m Pop Eye, the Sailor Man. She didn’t want him to stop and kept asking for more entertainment. The comedian’s program is humorous, funny but not foolish. No child old enough to appreciate entertainment is too young to like Pop Eye; no man is too old to enjoy his program.Mr. Welch is the one and only person who is the voice you hear as Pop Eye on the radio and in the movies. His tremendous versitality was first recognized at the time of the World War. It was Pop Eye, Harry Foster Welch, who was called upon to entertain and cheer the rest of the boys at the front. •Pop Ey§ has appeared at the Y.tf. C.A. at Albany, when 320 people attended. At this time he ate a peck of spinach at the request of some of the Albany Boys’ Academy students who happened to be in the audience.Incidently, he has a daughter four years old named Sweet Pea, after the famous cartoon character. There will be a matinee for elementary grades and junior high schools at 11:15 in the morning, but the main performance will not start until 8:00 p. m. (DjS-T.).The Lowville Academy School band is without question one of the high ranking musical organizations in the eastern states, having competed in practically all of the New York State contests, with high ratings, since it was first organized in 1927 under the leadership of Luther B. Askins. In addition to the state contests the Academy band has been eligible to compete in four national contests, but owing to the lack of funds, has been privileged to compete only once, at which time it received a very commendable rating. The fact that the Lowville Academy band has won so many times and received such high ratings eliminates the necessity of making any remarks concerning the ability of Mr. Askans as a very, efficient and qualified leader. The Academy band, which should continue as a permanent organization, is badly in need of new uniforms and additional instruments impossible for the individual boys and girls to purchase personally. In view of these conditions ways and means must be provided by those interested in the band and other public-spirited people in our locality, to supply its needs.
