Walker, who was principal of Kent high school, but who was elected superintendent at Hudson a year ago, has made good. He was re-elected for three years at a recent board meeting. A. Hoye Godfrey was elected teacher of instrumental music for one year. Miss Gwendolin Drew was re-electedcame here in Jan., 1866, and there was t no Universalist church here then, but j there was one in Brim field that Kent . (Franklin Mills) people attended. At I a reorganization of the church in the spring of 1867, Alvin Olin, P. Boosinger and J. D. Haymaker were elect-! ed trustees, Dr. A. M. Sherman, treas-| urer, Nelson Olin, clerk.I The members at that time were R. Olin, J. G. Whitcomb, F. H. Marshall, Mary Haymaker, Eliza Wright, Mary J. Parsons, Mary Boosinger, Almira Russell, A. Merrell, Mary Furry, Sy- , bil Bradley, Effie Parsons, Rhoda i Boosinger and others. The pastor was Rev. Andrew Willson, who was very popular and I believe preached more funeral sermons, and married more couples than any minister in this section. Dr. A. M.. Sherman was very active in getting subscriptions to build the church in • the winter of ’67 and ’68 and the church was built in 1868 and cost $17,000.At the dedication in ’68 many gave freely, James Haymaker giving $1500, Marvin Kent, I believe, gave the ground, as he invariably did to such institutions, and for which he has had very little credit. After the church was built it had: i no bell, and as I remember it, there i was no church bell in Kent at that i time, so a paper was circulated to get a bell for the Congregational church, which we were led to believe would be a partnership bell to be used for all purposes, but as I remember it, the sermon that was preached at the dedication of this bell by Rev. Mr. Hart, was so opposed to a partnership bell, that many people who had helped I were very indignant, and Joseph Stratton, of the Universalist church, gave $500 for a bell for the Univer-! salist church.
