Both of them are parsimonious in their habits, as a result no doubt of living where a bare subsistence was pro* cured with difficulty. \u other respect* there is a marked contrast. The Galician, so far os lie concerns himself with religion, has a religion of a highly ceremonial vaii iy, in which he is directed by a priesthood. The Doukhobor is ! greatly occupied with his religion | and is constantly considering its i healing on everything be does. He i has no priesthood and no ceremou-j Physically the lt;kiliciaus are : of A|p.braLnall aud the Duukhubors large jtifteen. As they have no legal marriage ceremonies, sinclt; they object to taking out a license, ibis may go on with impunity, and 1 have it on the authority of several iqen, who arc familiar with them ami in whose integrity I have full confidence, that there are many men with several wives living, niving, of course, only oqe at a time.1It seems clear that in the case f both Galicians and Doukhobors * longer residence should be required before they are given an equal voice in the government of the country, than is required ill the case of intelligent immigrants from Great Britain, Iceland, or Oeimany. The spread of public education among the children in these colonies is imperatively required. Not only public schools, but a plentiful supply of reading matter is demanded. The Galician who gut s to school in Winnipeg becomes assimilated, not so much from learning the multiplication table as from learning the multii lication j from imbibing ideas, aspirations, ways of thinking and feeling from I bis companions. A Galician who goes to school in a Galician colony, with only Galician companions, can get these imperceptible, as similating influences only through reading matter. Pom Brown s School Days may do more to as- ' -a mi late a Galician and make him a good citizen, than even a knovv-‘ rib une.*tit»i pot»e regr uion vv hilt; not wliii the real, won into the selv ronl ed iwotmgUKde-,iof V11THECOMINGSEASON.The hot weather is here, aud you * uot want to hake, you don't have *.
