A Sanguinary Encounter.Petersburg special: Winslow, a smalltown south of here, was the scene of a sanguinary encounter Wednesday afternoon between Hida Wright, the deputy town marshal, and Benjamin and Joe Hook, two Ayrshire miners, which terminated in the instant killing of Joe Hook and the dangerous if not fatal, wounding of the officer. Bast Saturday night the Hook brothers and a number of their associates came to Winslow and assaulted the town marshal, beating him almost to death. They then traversed the streets, threatening the lives of prominent citizens. At length they began the destruction of property by throwing clubs and bricks through the windows and doors. The citizens were terrorized and did not dare assert themselves. Wednesday afternoon the Hook boys, who were leaders In Saturday night’s rioting, went to Winslow and began a repetition of their former conduct. As Marshal Wright w'as endeavoring to read a, warrant to Ben Hook issued by Justice Chambers, on account of his previous depredations, his brother Joe attacked the officer. He first tore the officer's badge from his coat and threw it away, striking him at the same time. Ben Hook struck the officer with a razor, cutting a deep gash from the corner of the left eye to the mouth. At this juncture Joe Hook repeated his attack on the officer, who was much smaller than his antagonist, and the officer drew his revolver and fired, sending a ball through Hook’s brain. Hook fell face down and death was instantaneous. The officer then placed Ben Hook under arrest. The greatest excitement prevails. Sheriff Bass and his deputies have been called to Winslow to preserve order, as a raid by friends of the Hooks is feared.
