Davidson is now lying at the point of death, and Philpot is in jail surrounded by a strong guard. His friends, some 200 in number, are threatening his release. The Phil pots, who are regarded as the most dangerous partisans in Clay county, have taken little part in the Baker-White feud up to this time, but now that the Baker faction Las been so crippled they have been gradually lending their influence, until the affair of Sunday has brought them face to face with the Whites, the dominant faction in the county.Beverly White is sheriff of the county, and Granville Philpot, a brother of the man who shot Davidson, has several times aspired to the office, Both men are Republicans, but the Whites have proved themselves constantly the masters of the Philpots in politics. White liu5 about him a strong coterie oi f cartes** men, and if a clash comes the noted bat' tie between the Griffins and the Philpots will be outdone. The Philpots in the Griffin feud came out victorious and escaped prosecution, Their failure to convict any of the Phil-pots hurt the White faction, which.is associated with the Howard dim, of which Jim Howard, in jail at Frankfort charged with murdering Senator William Goebel, is one of the leaders. The Griffin faction will now* flock to xlie assistance of the Whites and thus make the Philpots the smaller faction. The Bakers, several of whom feared being brought into the Goebel assassination •ease, are now* all at home, and Sheriff White, fearing an assault on the town, has sworn in some 20 men as deputy sheriffs and placed then] on duty.John Powers, brother of Secretary of State Powers, has been arrested in the mountains of Knox county near Bar-boursville on the charge of complicity in the murder of Governor Goebel.
