If the Monongah Glass team shows the class all season that was shown in the game Saturday with Ida May, the local baseball public will be treated to some good base ball during the summer. Every thing was just right Saturday, ex cept the weather, which was threatening, and kept many fans from seing one of the best games ever staged at the ball park. The Monongah Glass has a good look ing bunch of players this season and when they have worked to gether a few more times will be one of the best teams in the state. Burns pitched a great game on Sat urday, and so did Trader for Ida May. Both pitchers hit well and were Instrumental in the run mak ing. So close was the contest that it might have gone into extra in nings if Trader had not tried to score from second on an infield error in the ninth. He was thrown out at the plate, and the game end ed 3 to 2 in favor of the Glassies, much to the jor of the home folk. Fairmont fans should support the Monongah Glass team to the limit. For years they have had a good baseball team, and this year they look especially good. There should be a capacity crowd out for the games on Memorial Day with King mont, and which will be in the na ture of a benefit for the local chap ter of the American Flint Glass Workers. Buy your ticket early and get a chance to win an auto mobile free. Another big crowd should be out next Saturday after noon for the game between the Glassies and the Fairmont State Normal School. East Side High School lost a game to Farmington Saturday § to 6, the game being called in the fifth by agreement. Fielding er rors were responsible for the de fect of the East Siders. The Glassworkers who have charge of the big double bill to be pulled off here on Memorial Day, when the Monongah Glass team meets Kingmont in a morning and afternoon contest have sent in re ports that they are ready to han dle one of the largest crowds that ever packed South Side Park for any baseball game. They have sold 1,000 tickets and many more will be sold during the present week, while a large number of fans are holding back waiting for the day of game to get their tickets. The tickets that are sold at the gate on the day of the games will have no free chance of the Dodge car to be given away on that day. The ticket with a free chance will be on sale up until Saturday afternoon. Being as Saturday is one of the big Expansion Days for Rairmont( the manager of the Monongah Glass has arranged a big bargain) that should attract many shoppers as well as baseball fans for this day. On that date the Normal School outfit and the Glassies will have it out The game is to be played to help the Normal school out of the losg debt which they have suffered during the season. “The most successful ever is the phrase generally used by visit ing officials, newspapermen, high school coaches, managers and athletes in referring to the fifth annual West Virginia high school track and field meet held by the State University Saturday.” The weather, while threatening, was ideal for record-breaking perfor mances as is evidenced by the breaking of eight of the fifteen record. The track, which in for mer years has been soft, was in the best shape it has ever been and there was no complaint on this score while the other appoint ments were all that could be de sired. The entertainment of the visiting athletes of the fraternity houses is an arrangement that meets with unanimous approval and the size of the crowd of s tars this year was just sufficient to comfortably all the thirteen houses on the campus. The offi cials came in for many words of praise as it was the first of the five meets that has been run off exactly according to a time sche dule. The morning events drag ged a little due to the large num ber of competitors, but in the af ternoon the final event was called and run off just to the minute provided on the printed program. There will be no change in the general plan for next year, sec tional meets being held in various parts of the state to qualify men for the state meet here, although there probably will be some minor changes in classification, arrange ment, etc. The general grouping of teams, however, is regarded as very satisfactory and the fact that thirteen new schools competed in this year's meet is indicative of the growing popularity of the meet. State University authori ties have already started plans for next years meet for May 12-19th.
