Lt. Col. Jack H. Turner, one of two U.S. Air Force officers shot to death today in Tehe ran, Iran, is a Southern Illi nois native and former student at Southern Illinois University- Carbondale. His last area address was Christopher. Lt. Col. Turner was born in Carbondale on Dec. 24, 1929, to Dr. Marion and Genevieve Turner. The family later moved to Christopher, where Mrs. Turn er now lives at 608 S. Tomas St. Dr. Turner died about 10 years ago. Mrs. Turner was noticed ear ly today of her son’s death by Col. James R. Fenn, com mandant of the SIUC Air Force ROTC unit. Mrs. Turner said she first heard of the shooting incident during a 6:30 a.m. radio news broadcast. “When I heard it I thought maybe it could be him,” she said. “Two officers came to the door at five min utes to 7, and that was it.” Mrs. Turner said her son was an adviser to the supreme im perial commander’s staff in Iran. “To know nothing more than what was in the death notice,” she said. “He was being driven to work when two men came up and shot him in cold blood.” Lt. Col. Turner graduated from Christopher High School in 1947 and attended SIUC from the spring of 1948 to the fall of 1951. He then attended the University of Illinois and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he received a bachelor’s degree in general education in 1961. He later re ceived a master’s degree in public administration from Sac ramento State College, Calif. He was married to the for mer Harvelee Greenwood of Benton, and had three chil dren, a boy and two girls. Lt. Col. Turner’s wife and family were with him in Teh eran, where the children at tended the American School. Classmates of Lt. Col. Turner at SIUC included David Ben dieman, David Kenney and James E. Walker, all of Car bondale and Bill Hudgens, for merly of Carbondale, now liv ing at Edwardsville, according to Robert Chaniel, SIUC alum ni director. Walker said today he and Turner were members of the same fraternity, Chi Delta Chi. Turner was secretary-trea surer. “He was very well-liked,” Walker said. At Teheran, Lt. Col. Turner was a personnel staff officer with the U.S. Military Assist ance Advisory Group since Au gust, 1974, according to the public information office of the Secretary of the Air Force, which also reported he was in the Air Force for 23 years.
