Arlington Mayor Tom Vandergriff has declared that the annual Buddy Poppy Sale will go on May 24-26 by the city’s Veterans of Foreign Wars members. During the sale, between 40 and 50 VFW workers will sell the hand-made poppies at Six Flags Mall, Forum 303 and other Arlington shopping areas. Proceeds of the sale go toward relief for the disabled veteran locally and nationally, Rehabilitation Services and the VFW National Home for children in Eaton Rapids, Mich. The poppy sale is a traditional event which has contin ued since 1922 to fill in gaps in veterans assistance programs sponsored by federal, state and local governments. All Buddy Poppies sold by the VFW are assembled by disabled veterans in Veterans Administration and State Veter ans Home facilities. The man who makes the finished poppy is paid a small wage. The project is also used for physical and psychiatric therapy programs. A breakdown of where the proceeds of the sale go in cludes 60 per cent for local VFW relief funds, 22.4 per cent for veterans rehabilitation services, 6.7 per cent for the VFW Na tional Home, 2.9 per cent for assembly by disabled veterans and 8 per cent for the cost of material, shipping, promotion and postage. The Buddy Poppy Sale is conducted in May prior to Memorial Day by from 7,000 to 8,000 VFW posts and auxilia ries throughout the United States. At the time of the proclamation signing, Vandergriff ,was also presented a plaque honoring him for his service to the program by Ray Wojnicz, Buddy Poppy chairman of VFW ‘Post 856 in Arlington. Also present to witness the signing were two Civil Air Patrol cadets from the Crusader Composite Squadron in Grand Prairie, Robin Saxton and Butler Faulk, and the chair man of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 856, Mrs. Ken Ful ton.
