Psychologybv Libby Frommer Rosen '52For my thesis in psychology I designed and administered a questionnaire to measure the effect of Officer Candidate School an attitude change. The members of a graduating group of candidates and of an incoming group of candidates at Ft, Sill, Oklahoma, took the questionnaire which attempted to get at their attitudes toward discipline and specific OCS practices. An open-end question was included in which the men could express anything they felt to be important which was not included in the questionnaire as a whole.The results proved that the five months of officer training are very effective in changing attitudes. The graduating class stoutly defended the high disciplinary standards jet by the tactical staff of OCS. while the incoming group felt that discipline was too strict. The morale of the latter group was much lower than that of the former. The members of the new class were bettor able to recall their attitudes as enlisted men than were the members of the graduating class, many of whom projected their own attiitudes onto what they thought were th-attitudes of the average enlisted man. This seems to show that OCS creates a barrier to understanding between- officers and enlisted men.The differences between the groups were not caused by differences in age. education, length of service, enlisted rank, or combat experience. The groups were closely similar in age and education. The average age of both groups was twenty-two, and the majority had had some college education. The two groups felt the same about the value of the OCS training in the future. The prevailing attitude was that OCS was doing all right but that it could do better.The topic proved very interesting and worthy of further study.
