Land Acquired by Jour nal-News Praised by Those Who Visited It. By LESLIE M. FOWLER. When after several weeks’ careful investigation we finally located Ra cine Community beach on the wes’ shores of Lac Vieux DeBert, we little dreamed land had been acquired in a territory with which so many Ra 's people are thoroughly acquaint. The first announcement of the project began to bring telephone and personal inquiries as to the exact location of the tract and in a few hours no less than a dozen people had called to tell us that they knew the country well, and that we had been altogether too modest in our statements concerning it. Photographs of fishing parties on the Vieux Desert, published in the Journal-News, were furnished by people whom we never knew had the lake. And what is more, every one of them is ready to buy a lot the minute the plot arrives. Many Places of Intercet, Lac Vieux Desert and the sur rounding territory has any number of interesting phases outside of the fact that it is in the center of one of the finest fishing and hunting territories in the north country. It is rich in Indian lore and tra dition as well as historical facts, being the ancient hunting grounds of the Chippewas, Pottowatomie« and Sioux for hundreds of years be fore the latter were driven across the Misississippi river to become prairie Indians. It was a rich fur territory and French-Canadian trad ing posts were at various times es tablished on the shore of the lake. In fact, one of the resorts now op erating within a mile of Racine Community beach occupies the site of a fur trading post that existed there before the Revolutionary war. Wilderness Borderland. Although adequately served with 0l0 roads, schools, churches and all requirements of modern civiliza tion, it is in fact the borderland of practically the last piece of actual wilderness in northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan, the great stretch of unoccupied territory directly north of Lac Vieux Desert into which even the lumberman has scarcely as yet made little headway. It is because of this that the territory affords such excellent fish ing and hunting. And yet it is handy to everything, in fact much more so than any of the numerous tracts examined far ther south. It is less than four miles from a _ railway station. Churches of all denominations are within easy reach. Schools are with in walking distance. Stores, tele *s and even moving picture theaters are much closer than to many residents of Racine county. A modern hospital is to be found at Phelps only seven miles away.
