WATER POISONERS ARRESTED. Sensational Story Declared a Fake—Make up of the First Corps—Troops Arriv ing Daily—Firest Detachment of Merritt's Army to Sail Tonight. CHIGGAMAUGA NATIONAL PARK, Ga, May 2L—General Brooke has com pleted the formation of the First pro visional army corps, United States vol unteers, as follows: First division, under command of Ma jor General Wilden, three brigades as follows: first brigade, General A. 8. Until the complement of brigadiers has been appointed each brigade will be in command of the senior colonel. The First corps will be commanded by Major General John K. Brooke, who will also be In command of the army of the gulf. The following regiments arrived yes terday: First New Hampshire infantry, 12 companies, 1,009 officers and men, com manded by Colonel Robert H. Rolfe, Second Missouri infantry, 12 compa nies, 963 officers and men, commanded by Colonel W. K. Caffey, Battery B, Pennsylvania light artil lery, 121 officers and men, fully equip ped, commanded by Captain L. T. Hunt. The story sent out from here to the epect that three men had been arrested with arsenic on their persons with which it was supposed they would poison the water used by the troops is a fake pure and simple and was evolved from the imagination of several boys who are indulging In Hqueer, cigarettes and other vices and who are here as alleged correspondents of certain news papers. There is not the slightest foundation for the story, all the wells being under constant guard to prevent pollution as well as waste of water. Frank McReady, Company D, Twelfth New York, died yesterday from heart failure while on the march from Rows ville to the camp ground in the park. The remains will be sent to New York city for interment. THE PHILIPPINE EXPEDITION, Viret Transport Wil Sall For Manila 7 ™— ight WASHINGTON, May 21.—Advices re ceived at the war department yester day indicate that by to night the City of Peking, which is to carry troops and supplies to Manilla, wil have started on its way from San Francisco. Over 1,000 men will be aboard her. Following the Peking will be the steamers City of Sydney and the Australia, which, the department was advised yesterday, would be turned over today ready for londing. This work, It is hoped, can be accomplished In a few days, so that the second steamer to re-enforce Admiral Dewey will be close in the wake of the first. Secretary Merklejohn yesterday char tered another weasel to be used for transport purposes across the Pacific. This is the Zealandia of the Ocean Steamship cmpany, which can carry new men. She is 77 feet long, 37 feet helm and is of 2,600 tons burden. The Zealandia is now sailed under a foreign fag, and Mr. Meiklejohn has communi cated with congress with a view to reg [teration tat wil give her an American register.
