OUR HEROIC DEAD.LIST UT THOSE WHO SLEEP IN UN-.1AHKEI GRAVESAt Winchester, Va.—An Appeal From Secretary of State Cooke, to the People of the State, and to all Who Mold the - Lost Cause” Dear, to Help Erect Permanent and Suitable headstones to Their Graves.; j | News and Observer. 1Of the Confederate soldiers who ! lie buried al Winchester, Va.. the j •'raves of nearly all from the Stales other than Nmili Carolina are marked | by suitable headstones. There are 1 lour hundred and forty-eight graves ol our North Carolina soldiers which are unmarked, save by pine hoards, on , which arc inscribed in most cases— and where ever the facts are known — the name, company and regiment. These hoards were turnished by the | piou-, patriotic women of Winchester,I for the purpose of identifying the | grave.-, and in anticipation that they : would he i cplaced by monuments of I more enduring form. These are de-1 caying, and the time has come, f we , I would save the resting places ot our i dead patriots from oblivion, that we ’ should mark them by proper headstones. The Key. .lames Battle Avirett, who, during the war uud for many ■ years thereafter, had his home in \\ in-chcstcr, and his good wife, a native ot Manchester, have interested them-1 selves in this matter and have pro-1 cured for us the names of the Coaled,*1 crate soldiers who are buried at Winchester. A list of these is published below. It will only cost three dollars and fifty cents r*Oj apiece to procure 1 suitable marble headstones, with the 1 proper Inscriptions thereon. It will be ' seen from the. li.-t that nearly every ' North Carolina regiment that was in General Lee's Army has some representatives there. It is proposed that the headstone- shall he provided by • the following plan: Let every personwho will help in this work, instead of making contributions generally pay for one or more stones. If it shall happen in looking over the list that some shall prefer to purchase a stone for some particular soldier, that may he done, with the understanding that should two or more make the same selection, the one giving the first advice thereof would have the selection and the contributions of the others would go into the general fund.Mr. T. I’. Jcrman principal clerk in the Auditor’s otlice at Raleigh, has kindly consented to receive and hold the contributions until the work shall he accomplished. Let every one who will pay '.0 f ir a stone, or who will pay at that rale for several stones, (and I doubt not there are quite a number who will purchase several), send the money at once to Mr. Jer-mau.I appeal to the people of the Slate, and especially to the old soldiers, tor I realize that upon them the scheme depends lor success, to respond promptly and liberally.Veteran comrades, these he our brothers.(Signed) C.
