Television equipment theft suspects jailedSAN BENITO — Two men lire being held on bonds totaling $200,-000 each after being arrested in Mexico in connection with ithe theft of television station equipment here last September.John Craig Smoker, 23, of Harlingen and Edward Lloyd Kimberly, 34, of Anaheim, Calif., ;are being held in Cameron County Jail in lieu of the bonds.The two are charged with the federal offense of transport ing stolen property. They were mlso indicted on San Benito police charges of possession of stolen property.The stolen property, estimated at a total value of almost $150,(KK), included a television camera and a video recorder taken on Sept. 22 from KZLN-TV, Channel 60, a PBS station located in San Benito.A joint law enforcement effortacross state and international boundaries led to the arrest of the two men and the recovery of equipment similar to the items missing.San Benito detectives George Gomez and Martin Garza worked together with the FBI, Glendale, Calif., police, Mexico City police, and other agencies, Gomez said.The two indicted men were arrested in Cancun, Yucatan, by Mexican police, Gomez said. They were transported to Brownsville and turned over to the FBI.A video recorder which may be the same as the one stolen was taken to Mexico City before being recovered in a repair shop in Glendale, Gomez said.Gomez and Brownsville FBI agent Bob Nixon also recovered a television camera in Little Rock, Ark.
