BALTIMORE (AP)—A New York subcontractor has been charged with safety violations in connection with the collapse of a shaft that collapsed at the Outer Harbor Bridge construc tion site, killing one man and seriously injured another. The U.S. Department of La bor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the shaft of steel rods that col lapsed at the Hawkins Point ‘construction site May 4 was not THE SUNDAY TIMES AS Salisbury, Md., Sun., May 2 8, properly supported to prevent a collapse. The agency charged Bildot Steel Corporation of Mt. Ver non, N.Y., with illegal failure to provide proper support for the shaft and another one close by and fined the company $500. David Hilling, 32, a member of Iron Workers Local 16, was trapped inside the shaft and crushed to death. Another man was thrown clear and injured.
