Braves swept to their fourth' straight track and field championship last Friday on Cook field. The Braves took seven firsts, five seconds, four thirds, and five fourths to roll up 63 points.The Baker University Wildcats placed second with 44 points, the Coyotes from Kansas Wesleyan came in third with 20, Bethany scored 18, for fourth place. Bethel 11 for fiftji, College of Emporia 8 for sixth, and McPherson 1 point for last place.Three conference , records fell in the meet. Two were broken by Ottawa and one by Baker. Hank Doering, the sophomore speedster from Garnett, snapped the tape in 9.8 seconds to set a new record in the 100-yard dash. The old record of 9.9 seconds was made by Truman Haskell of C. of E. in 1947. Vaughn Kimbrough, also a sophomore, come roaring down the stretch to win the 220-yard dow hurdles in 24.2 seconds. The old mark was 24.7 seconds set by Dick Haas of Baker last year. Haas finished third this year. The third record-breaking performance was turned in by Kenneth Sterns of Baker in the high jump. Sterns high jumped 6 feet, 2 and % inches to shatter the old mark of 6 feet, 1 and % inches, set by Bob Hunt of Kansas Wesleyan in 1942.„ High point honors were shared by Doering and Kimbrough, each pulled down 10 points. Doering won firsts in the 100 and 220-yard dashes, 'and Kimbrough won firsts in the 220-low hurdles and the 440-yard dash. Three men tied for third high, Francis Bennett of Ottawa with first in the javelin and a second in the shot put, Ylander of Bethany with first in the broad jump, a third in the 220-yard dash and a fourth in the 100-yard dash, and Blackburn of Wesleyan with seconds in the 220 dash and broad jump and a third in the 100.Jim Douglas won the mile in another race to the finish with Bob Kays of Baker. Douglas trailed Kays-most of the way, poured onthe speed in the back stretch, out-speeding his opponent and passing him on the last curve and then sprinting to the tape. Johnny Wilson beat out Kolacny of Baker to win the discuss and bring in the last first place for Ottawa.Other good performances of the Braves were the 880-yard run in which Roy Browning was nosed out by Gerald Schmidt of Bethel. The pole vault was won by Boyce Smith of Baker by vaulting 12 feet, 4 inches with Jerry Reiserer of Ottawa barely missing the same mark. Doug Rhoads of Ottawa took third.Noble Stark, Ottawa distance runner, was looking good in the two-mile when he was forced to retire from the race because of his ailing side, his main difficulty the last two years. He finished third in the rpile.A dropped baton in the mile relay between Doug Welborn and Jim Asher probably cost the Braves a first in that event as they were beaten out by Bethel.It was the eighth straight conference championship won by the Braves.
