WEDNESDAY, May 20—(P)— The motorboat Pippin, with four aboard, returned here after encount ering heavy seas. Ice and spray freezing on the deck made further progress dangerous. The boat reach ed a point forty miles from Nome, opposite Cape Wooley. Omdahl, carrying a hundred tele grams for Nobile and members of the crew, several from Mussolini, begged Captain Peterson to return, as the water and ice would likely destroy the telegrams. Peterson lashed Mrs. Peterson to the mast to prevent her going overboard from the crusted ship. No word has been received from Captain Oscar Wistin, who is piloting the Nunivak. The Coast Guard probably will assist Peterson in his next attempt to reach Teller. People here expected to give No bile a big reception when Nobile and the members of the crew of the Norge reached Nome. Nobile is generally considered the big man of the expedition. Antonio Polet probably will be made vice-consul for Italy within a few days, as arrangements are now being made with Premier Mus solini. Ellsworth leaves tomorrow by dogmobile, with Leonard Seppala driving twenty Siberian dogs ahead of a hand car on the narrow gauge road, for the Hammon Consolidated ditch camp at Cape Horn, where he intends to spend a vacation, en joying the simple life of the sour dough prospector. Ellsworth said he is anxious to eat some sourdough hot cakes, as he did many years ago while mining. He said Mrs. Nib ling’s hospitality, kindness and cooking reminded him of his moth er at home. Ellsworth previously had said he intended to walk to Cape Horn, but when told that it was forty-two miles distant he said he preferred to ride. He said his principal reas on for going was that he wanted to do some hunting and get some exercise.
