His father, John Adam Smith, %vho was tlie recorder and school teacher of their home town,emigrated to this country with his \\*ife, Catharine! Weaver) and family when Lewis was only three years old. Before they were permitted to land, while the men were all ashore, the ship was hoarded by robbers and Mr. Smith lost $7,5»* in cash. He worked for a while in the employ of a relative near Lj Baltimore and later York. Pa., and Lp Canton, O., but finally he settl'd on a small farm east of Canal tl Fulton. After living on several ditferent farms a number of years he bought the farm now occupied by his son, Jacob, whither lie removed in 1853, worked the soil, built the home and reared his family.He removed thence t«» his late resident in 1888.
