C ot*8 refatlotiai Council —Int creating I'rorcfCinfKMadison, Monday Evening, ( May 10, 1858. f Pursuant to notice from the desk on the preceding Sabbath, a meeting of the Congregational Church and Society convened at the Chapel this evening.Hy vote of the meeting Prof. O. M. Conover was called to the chair, and F. K. Holman elected Secretary pro tern.The object of meeting having been staged.rlt;a communication was read by the Rev. N. H. j tjdtEggleston, tendering his resignation of the pa-toral office, and requesting a council to dissolve, if deemed proper, the existing relations.A preamble and resolutions were then offered by Judge Cole, as follows:Whereat, It is apparent that there exists on the part of some of the members of this church a feeling of dissatisfaction with their Pastor, the Rev. Mr. Eggleston, a feeling which those entertaining it declare cannot i be removed while Mr. Eggleston remains the Pastor of this church and society, and which stands in the way of N. H. Eggleston’s highest usefulness in his ministry here —andWhereat, Under such circumstances, Mr. Eggleston ha* signified that he felt it to be his duty to ask fur a dismission from his pastoral charge to this Church and Society, and requested the Church and Society to unite with him in calling a mutual council for the purpose ot dissolving the pastoral relation heretofore existing between him and this religions society. ThereforeResolved, That it is the opinion of this Society that although Mr. Eggleston has never been installed over this Church and Society in the sense in which that word is commonly used, yet, that having received a call from such Church and Society nearly three years since to become their Pastor, which call was by him duly accepted, and he having in pur* ' ^ suaoce thereof eutered upon the full dis-, * charge of all the ministerial duties perform- s ed by pastors of Congregational Churches, ; co and having continued in the discharge of it those duties up to the present time, he is and ! mnst be recognued In truth and in tact the Pmtor of this Church and Society—entitled to all the privileges and immunities of a Pas h« tor—entitled to a conndl if lie desires it— j ch in conformity to the usages and customs of j w the Congregational Church, and we are j . therefore willing to unite with him in call-ing such a council according to his request.And further— ; ccResolved, That while this Society most tj, deeply laments the present state ot feeling in the Church, and the want of that union, In affection and love which ought at all times iu to subsist between a minister and his people, in and while yielding to the necessity which i seems to demand n termination of Mr. Eg-gleston’s ministerial labors among us, with- * out intending to reflect upon the conduct of w any one, we yet deem it eminently proper in j in view lt;f such termination of his labors to ex- j jj( press our great personal respect for Mr. Eggleston's religious and moral character, the ^ purity of his conduct, and our general satisfaction at the able and faithful manner in which he has discharged his pastoral duties while connected with this Church and Society.N. W. Dean having been called to thechair, the resolutions were discussed at some length by Prof. Conover, Mr. Eggleston and others. The folio wing substitute for the first, resolution and preamble was offered by F. J. Lamb and accepted ;Whereati, The Rev. N. H. Eggleston has tendered his rengntion of the ministerial relations lie holds to this Society, and has requested this Society to unite with him in calling a council to advise them in regard to dissolving the relation existing between him and this Society ; therefore,Resolved, That this Society concur in such request.The preamble and resolution as substituted were then adopted by a vote of the meeting. Pending the vote upon the last resolution submitted by Judge Cole, remarks were made bv Messrs. Davenport, Pickart, Lamb, and others, and it was then adopted by a nearly unanimous vote.On motion, Messrs. Lamb, Pickart, and Scofield were constituted a committee to consult with Mr. Eggleston in the convocation of a council.The meeting then adjourned.F* K. HOLMANSec’y pro tem.
