ONE DEAD AND TWO INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENTJoy Ride to Welcome New-Comers From Italy Ends TragicallyMary Carollo of Diamondville was almost instantly killed and Victoria Arduvina probably will die as a result of an automobile accident which occurred last Tuesday morning at ! o'clock between Glencoe and Oakley us a party of seven girls were returning to Diamondville in a large Buick car. The others in the party were Anna Halkovitch, Theresa Cavalo. Theresa Gutta, Christina Bolla and Annie Arduvina. Christina Bolla and Anna , Arduvina were uninjured. The accident occurred on a straight piece of road a the same spot where \ John Westlund was killed two years ago. This fine stretch of road seems a strong temptation to speed up, and■ u number of accidents have occurred 1 here, although it is the straightest and best piece of road in the county, i Conflicting stories as to the cause of 1 Tuesday's accident have been given,, and it seems that none of the girlscould give a straight story, being more or less hysterical following the accident owing to the death of one and the injury of several in their party. The most logical conclusion is that there being a flat tire on one of the rear wheels, the heavy car was I hard to control. When the party reached the straight stretch of road,' according to the witnesses at the col onel’s inquest held Wednesday afternoon, one of the party was singing a . song and the others in the rear of the car requested that the driver go slower that all might hear. They were traveling a about 25 miles an hour at the time, and the car was running near the edge of the road, and when the driver endeavored to go to the center of the highway she gave the ' steering wheel too shurp a pull, the ; momentum of the speeding car causing the front wheels to buckle and turned the car completely over, so that H landed on all fours crosswise of the road. All were thrown from the car, hut Miss Carollo and those injured were struck by the heavy machine when it turned over.Assistant Superintendent T. C.1 Russell of the Diamond Coal Coke ’ company was the first person to reach the scene of the accident. He found Mary Carollo lying prostrate ' upon the road, while her companions were standing about the car. The cn-1 gine of the machine was still running when he arrived. He hurriedly picked up Miss Carollo and took her to his buggy, and at this time she was still living, but expired shrtly threaftcr.1 He ordered Anna Halkovitch to turn 1 the car about and proceed to Diamond-ville, but the young woman’s nerves 1 were shattered, and after righting 'Ithe car she could do no more. By : I this time Benjamin Young drove up to the scene in the Lavine auto truck, and the dead girl and the two injured were placed In it and rushed to the ‘ Lincoln County Miners’ hospital in Kcmmerer. Later the body of Miss | Carollo was taken to the Erabree■ i morgue.Anna Halkovitch was not seriously injured and was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, but the Arduvina girl -emains in serious condition, although hopes for her life are ' I entertained., The Arduvina girls and one other in the party only arrived in Diamond-.. vllle on the morning train four hours 1 before the accident. They came from . Itulv. and it is said that they are engaged to marry three young men of Cumberland. The other four are employed by Joseph Colletti in bis dunce i hall and as domestics. The girls, whose ‘ ttgefi ranKi* from 19 to 25 years, fin-* ihhetl their work shortly after mid-i night, and it was agreed that it was i no use retiring, as they were to meet ’ their friends from over the seas at -it u. in., and they were on hand with - the Buick car, which ib the property I of Joe Colletti, when the early morning train arrived. They then went toi the Colletti home, where they had• breakfast, uftcr which it was decided ! to give the newcomers a glimpse orthe country in which they are to make their future home. First, they went n. Frontier, then went to Cumberland, , where the new arrivals met tncir fiances, and it was upon their return when the accident happened. It is said that the damage tu the , automobile will not amount to over .
