This opportunity was given to senior English and creative writing teacher Mrs. Martha Moore.Mrs. Moore was given the chance to meet her biggest idol Eudora Welty. Ms. Welty is a southern writer, bom in Jackson, Mississippi. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for her novel The Optimist’s Daughter. She has written many books, short stories and critical reviews.“I felt excited, nervous, fortunate and grateful to have the chance to meet this writer who has been like a teacher to me. From studying her work and her comments about writing, I have learned much to help my own writing,” Mrs. Moore said.Mrs. Moore was invited by senior English teacher Mrs. Kathryn White and some of her friends from the South to go to Jackson to attend a benefit for the New Stage Theatre in Jackson. Eudora Welty was going to be at the benefit and, knowing that Mrs. Moore is a Eudora Welty fan, Mrs. White knew she would probably like to attend.“We purchased our tickets and were entitled to attend a reception with Eudora Welty and Reynolds Price who is another well-known writer.“We watched Reynolds Price’s worldMrs. Martha Moore sits with her lifetime Whitepremier play called (Full Moon) and then had dinner in a southern home after the play,” Mrs. Moore said.Among other things, Mrs. Moore received a numbered print signed by Eudora Welty and Reynolds Price. Meeting her idol turned out to be a wonderful dream come true for her sinceshe has been waiting to do so all of her life. She also got the chance to meet a few celebritdies.idol Eudora Welty. She said she felt honored that I had come so far to meet her,” Mrs. Moore said. “Although she was bom in 1909, she still has a sharp mind,” she continued.Mrs. Moore and Mrs. White were later interviewed by reporters from the Jackson News and were featured in an article abouttheir journey from Dallas to Jackson to meet their life long idol.“That night, mingling with the guests outdoors around the pool, eating shrimp and avacado appetizers, listening to music from the piano player inside, the moonlight shining on the giant magnolia trees, I knew I could start our drive back at 11 p.m. and have enough energy to last all night, ” an excited Mrs. Moore concluded.
