Orem High School's soccer team won the state championship Friday night at Haws Field by edging Cottonwood, 4-3, in four overtimes. Cottonwood scored in the first two minutes of the game on a corner kick that struck an Orem defensive fullback and went into the goal. Orem came back 12 minutes later to the score on a breakaway by right wing Kevin Hall, who pounded the ball into the corner of the net from 16 yards out. From that point on, it was a battle between a physically strong, long kicking Cottonwood team and a smooth passing, quick Orem squad. The hour and 10-minute game ended in a 4-1 try. A 20 minute overtime period failed to produce a goal for either team os did the next two 15-minute sudden death overtimes which followed. The game then went into penalty kicks, five players on each team taking one kick each. Cottonwood shot bet with Orem's all-state goalie, Verl Hovey, holding the Colts to two goals. Orem then scored three of their first four attempts on shots by halfbacks Kay Jex and Paul Ethington and Fullback Richard Nimer. The championship was a carbon copy of the final game two years ago when Orem lost to Bountiful in five overtimes on penalty kicks. Bountiful won again last year by beating East in double overtime. But Coach Garlan Fitzgerald's team reversed the Situation this time to earn the championship trophy in front of an overflow crowd of 1,000 fans. Earlier in the day, Bountiful beat Murray, 2-0, for consolation honors. West defeated Viewmont for third and fifth places and BYU downed Montana, 9-1, in a preliminary game to the championship. The final state soccer Standings are as follows: 1. Orem (140-1); 2. Cottonwood (10-20); 3. West (64-1); 4. Bountiful (7-2-2); 5. Viewmont (8-2-1); 6. Murray (7-30); 7. East (7-2-1); 8.
