The word “ecollage”’ pro nounced e'ke-lazh is a coined word, a combination of the two words ecology and collage. To further define, the word ‘eco'ogy’ means a branch of bi ol ogy that deals with the rea tions between living organisms and their environment. The word ‘collage’ means a kind of art in which bits of materials are pasted together for their symbolic or suggestive effect. Thus “ecollage” will be an attempt to collect evaluate and write about various ideas and concepts pertaining to the en vironment and our relationship to it. The intent of this column will be to discuss the environ mental issues which face us and try to help in evaluating their importance and their impact on the world we live in. There will also be suggestions and ideas on how each person can help in the solution to these problems. The articles are written by members of the Citizen's Envir onmental Committee (CEC). Any one else interested in helping is asked to attend regular month ly meetings of the CEC at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month in room B-100 at the Austin State Junior College. The recycling symbol is slicowr at the top of the column. It represents the need for a wise use and re-use of our natural resources and further symboliz es how all things in nature are part of continuing cycles which are interrelated and interdepen dent. Beginning next week the first series of articles will be con cerned with a means of trans portation more environmentally compatible than the automobile, namely people - powered trans portation.
