Mrs. Mary Longley-Rodman, daugh ter of Abner H. Longley, one of the first settlers of Lebanon, says that, ac cording to her father, there is a prev alent error in regard to the location of the first house in Lebanon—that it was situated on the corner occupied by the J. H. Barker drug store, in stead of on the opposite corner, where the Boone County Bank is located. Here her father conducted a hotel not a pretentious affair, but one in keeping with the demands of the times. The first term of court held in Lebanon was conducted under the native trees on what is now the pub lic square. The judge, whose name Mrs. Rodman does not recall, came from Lafayette on horseback. Great preparation had been made for the entertainment of the judge at the ho tel, and Mr. Longley was greatly dis appointed when the noon hour arrived and the judge took from one side of his saddlebags provision for his din ner and from the other the feed for his horse. Mr. Longley was the first postmas ter for Lebanon, and upon the arrival of the mail, which came by pack horse, he would put the letters in his hat and deliver them to the residents of the village. He was also the first clerk of the town, and was elected to the legislature. Ife was an advocate of prohibition, and presided over the first temperance meeting held in the new town of Lebanon.
