Wilfred passed away Monday, April 7, 2008 at Birtle Health Centre at the age of 88, with Marian by his side. Wilfred was born to Wilson and Winifred (Pizzey) Hamilton March 14, 1920 on the farm N.W. 4-18-28 in the R.M. of Ellice. He went to school at Foxwarren leaving at an early age to help on the farm. He continued his schooling by correspondence, taking a four year course graduating in Edmonton April 1941 as a Diesel and Auto Engineer. With this trade he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed at isolated bases on the west coast, setting up power houses and bringing electricity to the bases. He was stationed at Bella Bella and Smithers when he went to the Comox and Tofino he worked and taught. In November 1945 he was discharged in Winnipeg. On June 2, 1945 he married Marian Newsham at Home Street United Church in Winnipeg by Rev. CH. Whitmore. It was a double wedding with her cousin Eileen (Wood) and Ed Munn. Wilfred had many jobs offered to him but came home to farm his grandparents homestead. He was a Canadian Seed Grower, retiring at 85 and still able to throw square bales. He was Secretary Treasurer for the U.G.G. for 34 years and was the oldest permit book holder when they demolished the elevator in 2000. Wilfred was a community worker. He served as an elder at Westminster United Church and Director for Zion cemetery. He was a life member of the Legion serving 50 years on the executive, a member of the Air Force Association and Commonwealth Museum in Brandon. He served on the board of Foxwarren Credit Union. Also worked with the book “The Fox's Tale”. He was a member of the local museum and Leisure Centre. Wilfred was an avid hunter, marksman and used to leave school classes to practice at Foxwarren Rifle Range. He taught Manitoba Hunters Safety for 35 years. He was a member of the Russell Game and Fish Association, was a correspondent for Canadian Black Powder Federation and a life member of the National Rifle Association of America. As a boy he was a member of the Foxwarren and Solsgirth Girls and Boys Calf Club. Wilfred had a train set, also collected John Deere tractors, large and small. He loved to fish and play cards. He had said “I never regretted serving for my country or farming. Times have changed. I've seen the grocery stores go, curling rink, elevators, school, cafes, gas stations, and now the church. Wilfred was predeceased by his parents Wilson and Winnie, siblings Walter, Gordon, Myrtle (Ed) McDonald, daughter Barbara and grandson Monty Black. Wilfred was a man of integrity, honest and proud. He will be sadly missed by his wife Marian of 62 years, daughters Patricia Waldron and Wendi Hamilton, son Jack (Kathie) Hamilton, brother Jim (Mae) Hamilton, sister-in-law, Carleen (Tom) Cathro, Rick Zastre, Michael Fener, many nieces, nephews and comrades. Grandchildren: Melanie Black, Mandy (Christian) Onyebuchi, Wade (Lindsey) Fener, Troy and Casey Waldron; Kara (Dan) Pelletier, Lindsay Zastre; Jordan (Erin), Justin (Teri) and Kaitlyn Hamilton. Great grandchildren: Alexandra, Josephine, Danielle and Keith Black; Timeska, Joshua, Keenan, Montana and Samantha Onyebuchi; Hunter Pelletier; Douglas and Lucas Hamilton. Foster grandchildren: Megan McGlenning, Kevin Courchene, Brittany McIntyre, Kristy Thomson, Anna Hill and Crystal McKinnon. Funeral service was held at Foxwarren Westminster United Church on Saturday, April 12 with Rev. Dwight Rutherford officiating. Isabelle Armbruster organist with the community choir; readers Kara Pelletier and comrade Terry Lawrence; Honourary pallbearers, Kay and Arthur Burdett, Geraldine and Bruce Ellis, Elizabeth and Joe Tschetter and Sylvia Parfitt; Urnbearer, Jordan Hamilton. Interment followed at Zion Cemetery. The Royal Canadian Legion formed a guard of honor at the church and conducted a graveside service with Russell Hamilton in charge of the Last Post/Reveille. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service was in care of arrangements. If friends desire donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
