From Saturday’s Daily News. Revs. Norris, of Noblesville, Herrick, of Ft. Wayne, Harrison of Albion, and Mendenhall, of Elkhart, and Murray of Milford, are expected to arrive in the city today to assist in the dedication of the new Second M. E. church on North Fifth street tomorrow morning and even ing. About a year ago Mr. James H. Mayfield offered to give a lot, well locat ed and valuable, to the Fist Methodist church if they would erect a church on the same to cost not less than sixteen hundred dollars. The official board ac cepted this generous offer, and appoint ed a board of trustees which should act as a building committee. This commit tee consisted of Messrs. Krider, May field, Joel Hawks, Overholt and Vesey. Later Mr. Krider resigned and James Himes was appointed in his stead. The corner stone was laid in November, and the building has progressed uninterrup edly until today, with no accident or misunderstanding. The total cost of the church will be about ~2,700, which with the lot on which it stands, will be more than $3,9000. All the windows were donated, also the pulpit chairs, the transoms of beautiful stained glass, the pulpit desk, and many other articles of value. Alto gether it is one of the handsomest little churches we have ever seen, and is an ornament of which every resident of Cro sden showd be proud. Mich credit is due to the energy of Rev. H. N. Herrick, under whose advice the enterprise was begun, and to the trustees before named, for their energy in carrying out the plans so well, and last, but by no means least, Rev. C. C. Albertson, who has been ener getic in getting the edifice completed, and especially at so much earlier a day than anticipated. It is expected that one week from Sunday a regular minister will be on hand to regularly hold services. THE News congratulates the North Side people, and the city as well, upon this enterprise. From Monday's Daily News. The beautiful new church of the Sec ond Methodist congregation, just com pleted on the North Side, was dedicated yesterday under the most auspicious cir cumstances. The day was perfect, and by 10:50 4. at. the house was crowded to overflowing, many being compelled to stand while others were turned away. The services opened with reading by Elder Simpson, when the audience joined in singing, folowing which Rev. H. N. Herrick earnestly and fervently invoked divine blessing. After the rendition of an appropriate anthem by the choir of the First church, the Rev. Norris, who formerly served the First M. E. church, but now located at Noblesville, was in troduced by the Elder and delivered a powerful discourse on the power and re ality of the gospel, using as his text the 5th verse of the first chapter of Apostle Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians. That his words touched the hearts of the large audience was evinced by the rapt attention with which they were listened to throughout. At the conclusion of the sermon Elder Simpson gave the meeting into the charge of Rev. C. C. Albertson, who re cited briefly the history of the building of the edifice then to be dedicated, which was substantially the same as given in Saturday's News. According to the fig ures it was shown that about $1,800 of the debt for the church had been provid ed for, leaving about $1,200 to be raised a the meeting in progress. The Reverend was in his usual amiable mood and soon had everyone in the house in the same state of mind, if indeed there were any who were otherwise inclined at the be ginning. He made the situation so plausible and pleasant that we believe there were few who left the house with out giving something, and as a result about $1,350 was soon pledged. This was sufficient to clear the church of debt with a margin besides, and it was announced that the dedication would take place at the evening service. The house was crowded again at the evening service, which was prolonged until nearly 10:30. Rev. Herrick, lately of the first church of this city, and now President of the Fort Wayne college, de livered the sermon and it was one replete with sound argument and a beautiful thought. Following the sermon, Elder Simpson conducted the dedicatory ser vice. Which was quite impressive. There was one addition to the church. At this service the subscription to the church was swelled to about $1,470, nearly $300 more than necessary, which places the society on a solid foundation. The church is a beautiful structure and will be a benefit and ornament to Goshen, and especially the North Side.
