From the Oil Regions,Plover, Penn’a., May 13, 18G5,As many inquiries have been made of me concerning the progress made on the Well now going down on the ifJohn Shaw Farm,55 on Pit Hole Creek, it occurred to me not improper to give, through the columns of the Courier, some facts on the subject, I visited this Well—which is about two and one half miles below the celebrated United States Well, yesterday, and learned from the Superintendent, Mr. Thomas Braze!, as well as from per** son a I observation, that everything promises well for a good Well. It is now down five hundred and eighty feet. In sand pumping a good deal of Oil has been obtained already, with a large amount of gas, which is considered a very favorable omen. An experienced Oil Creek man says he bus seldom, If ever seen betfcei indications of a good Oil Well than here. From the record of the Well, I am permitted by the very efficient Superintendent Mr. Brazel, to make a few extracts, which may interest some. From surface to 60 feet, found very hard holders, mud veins and shell rock.From CO to 90... .feet first sand rock,'* 90 to 235.... shale or slate rock,“ 235 to 245.... 2d sand rock.tl 245 to 270....shale or slate rock,u 270 to 273.. ..mud vein, withlarge quantities of gas and some oil, At a depth of 285 feet, came to Oil vein with large show of Oil. At a depth of 307 feet, came to mud or very tough blue clay, mixed with gravel or soap stone, At a depth of 375 feet, came upon a very hard shelving rock. Upon sand pumping found some Oil,At depth of 390 feet, found a sand rock, which was four and a half foot thick.At depth of 402 feet, came upon very hard whibh aand.At depth of 406 feot, came to red sand rock iriqh good show of Oil.At depth of 433 feet to 451 1-2, found 8d sand rock.At depth of 451 feet, found soap stone, with irery hard shell of rock.At depth of 540 feet, found black slate rock.
