CONFEDERATE VETERAN ANSWERS ! FINAL ROLL CALL! — j Mr. D. D. Nanney, Formerly of Co. C., 34th Regiment, N.C. V., Died Tuesday-Spindale, May 15.—Mr. Drury D. Nanney, aged 85, died at the home !of his son, Mr. Edgar Nanney, Tuesday night at 9:30. Mr. Nanney had been in declining health for several months and was taken seriously ill last week. Death came peacefully at 9:30, ending the suffering of this aged soldier of the Confederacy..Funeral services will be held today (Thursday), at Pleasant Hill Baptist church, west of Rutherford-ton, at 11 o’clock. The pastor of the church, Rev. M. M. Huntley, will be in charge of the services. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery.i Mr. Nanney is surv$Jfed by his widow, Mary Justice Nanney, and three children, Mrs. William H. Durham, of Tryon; Mrs. J. N. Fowler, who resides in Polk county, and Mr. Edgar Nanney, of Spindale. Twenty grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren survive.Mr. Nanney was born February 13, 1844, a son of Thomas and Polly Flack Nanney, of Union Mills. He was left an orphan when twelve years of age. He worked on a farm until the War Between the States, when he volunteered for service in Company C., 34th North Carolina Regiment, Infantry, commanded by Capt. M. O. Dickerson and Logan Twitty. He served during the entire period of war, and was paroled in April, 1865. During the four years of service in the Confederate service Mr. Nanney participated in more than thirty major engagements.After his parole he returned to Rutherford county where he engaged in farming. He was married to Miss Mary Justice on June 29, 1869, and to this union were born seven children, three of whom are now living.Mr. Nanney has been a life long member of the Baptist church, and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist church at the time of his death.
