(Continued from Page One) isfactory settlement might be made that would make unnecessary the city’s engaging in competition with individuals, which would lead to hard feelings and bitter competi tion. The petition was not repre sentative, Martin said, declaring 90 per cent of the business men in Denton refused to sign it. There is not a big profit in ice, but the company might be willing to cut a little in the price, Martin said. It takes 50 per cent more to man ufacture distilled water ice than raw water ice, which is sold in most towns near Denton, he said. R. M. Barns said that he thought the price of ice was too high but that it would be better to hold off the election and try to get a reduc tion in prices here. If a satisfactory adjustment cannot be secured then an election should be called and the ice plant built, he said. Mayor McKenzie stated that he had talked to Fred Rayzor when the first eqitation for a municipal plant was started to see if some settlement could be made. Mc Kenzie stated that it was not nec essary to repeat in all what he was told, but that he was informed that perhaps it might be best for the city to go ahead and build the plant. Many people ask him every day to have some action taken on the matter, he. Said. City Attorney T. B. Davis, said that there was no question but that such procedure as the peti tion asked, would be legal, and quoted his authority for the opin ion. He said that it was his idea that a price of 46c a hundred de livered, and 302 at the platform ‘was what the signers of the peti tion had in mind as a fair price for ice. Judge Brent Jackson said that he favored cheaper ice ot believed that it could be secured quicker by giving the extension of time which would probably permit a settlement and would not embroil the city in a fight. He suggested that action be postponed for about 20 days and an effort made to get an adjustment in ice prices, and if this could not be ‘done then the election ordered. Would Follow People’s Will Although opposed in principle to the city engaging in business ‘against individuals, Commissioner Lakey said that if the majority of the people wanted an ice plant that an election should be ordered, and then if a settlement is made the election should be’ called off. Commissioner Collier expressed his opinion that a three weeks delay wouldn’t interfere with the plans, since a plant couldn't be erected and put into operation this summer. Castleberry also said that he be lieved a three weeks delay would not be wrong, and that he didn’t want to do anything which would hurt the town. Lakey said that delaying action for 20 days would eliminate any chance for a plant to be operated this year and that he believed the delay should not be wanted. Long again took the floor and said that if any action was taken at the meeting that it would block any effort at settlement. He point ed out that if the city should de cide to erect an ice plant that it could not be put in operation be fore Sept. 1, and then it would enter a losing period of seven months. Nothing could be gained by rushing the plan for three weeks, he said. After the action was taken Mayor B. W.. McKenzie told the commis sion that bond buyers, who had drawn up the petitions, which had been circulated, had agreed to fi nance the erection as a plant as soon as the petition had been sign ed by a majority of the voters. This would indicate that an elec tion for the purpose would carry and they would be willing to rush the work to completion under such terms, McKenzie said. He also said that it was his understanding that members of the commission had understood this. The commission before adjourn ment passed an ordinance regulat ing the weight of busses operated over streets here, raising the max imum weight from one and one-half tops to two tons.
