'1 Li f * *1THE SCHOONER Reciprocity, Capt Peter Blackwood, from Pool’s Island, bound to St, John’s ran on the “Washballs” at the entrance of the Narrows this morning and a few minutes later sank in Freshwater Bay.The schooner was bound here for fishing supplies and while entering the Narrows misstayed and ran on the rocks.There was a strong wind at . thg time and the vessel struck with such force that a large hole was made in her and the water (lowed in freely.It was evident that she would sink in a few minutes so Capt. Blackwood . ordered the boat over, and all hands jumped in. Aiheavy sea was running and while in the boat the men narrowly escaped being drowned. On several occasions the boat all but upset and if it had, their lives would not have been worth much, as the water was verv rough. IPpt•* V 'A few minutes after the men took to the boat another very heavy sea struck the Reciprocity and swung her off the rocks.Capt. Blackwood decided to regain j her if possible and the crew rowed their hardest but the schooner drove at a rapid rate before the wind and the men .were unable to catch her.She drifted up in Freshwater Bay and when a few yards from the shore sank.The Reciprocity was owned by Capt Job Kean. She was a splendid schooner of 69 tons, built in 1903.While insured, her loss at the present moment is a serious one.She had very little cargo on board, but the captain and crew lost considerable money as they intended buying their summer supplies and when they took to the boat they had0to jump as .they stood and leave all behind them. iThe crew were picked up by the D.-n t _____ -____1 1_____ a.
