A C1VI0 IMPROVEMENT CMJIJ. Sndpoint has, so far as wo are aware, no club devoted to the work of civic improvement, though the Woman's club has done some very good work along those lines. It seems to us, however, that the work is important enough to have a club or society devoted whole-heartedly to its cause, and in this connection the little city of Newport, just over the line In Washington, provide* us with an object-lesson much more to the point than pages of discussion.The ladles of that place recently organised a Civic Improvement club Mto promote the beautifying of the town/* and one direction, in which they have been doing effective work has been that of interesting the school children In the destruction of the.weed „pests. A contest was Instituted between the school children of the several grades and It proved so successful in tho extermination of mullein, burdock and thistle that theclub will next declare war on the•dandelion. Prlxoa are offered and the contest will run until the first of June/ In tho meantime, however, the club will not be Idlei It will hold meetings with the city** to consider ways and means of beautify* »Ins and improving the. town.”.
