The annual Induction and Recep tion for incoming members of the Washington Irving Chapter of the National Honor Society was held at Honesdale High School on Wednes day, Apr. 28. Welcoming guests was the Socie ty’s President Stephanie Earley. After her opening remarks and the flag salute, Wayne Highlands District Superintendent Daniel J. O'Neil addressed the audience. He reminded them that we might possibly set our goals to become a “Zero Defect Eco nomy”,i.e., a nation that “does it right the first time.” Next, inductee Kary Barnes pre sented a vocal rendition of “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha. The traditional candlelighting ceremony followed. Each officer spoke briefly on the four qualities required for membership in the Socie ty. President Stephanie Earley stressed leadership; Vice President Amy Bonham, scholarship; Secretary Lisa DePasquale, character; Treasur er Andrea Gordish, service. The new members were introduced and then presented with their cards and pins by HHS Principal Thomas Jenkins. Andrea Herzog, Lori Johnson, and Martha Mains then entertained the audience with a clarinet trio rendition of “Minuette Finale” by Mozart. In the evening, parents of the stu dents viewed the same that had been seen in the morning’s all school assembly. This time the main speaker was Principal Thomas Jenkins. As part of their fulfillment of the service requirements for the National Honor Society, the members operate the school’s annual Bloodmobile in conjunction with the American Red Cross each spring. The society is advised by Carl Cerar, guidance counselor at HHS.
