Satanism creepingintarealice fearBy PETE REYNOLDS Last in a series“Yes, I'm writing what you might think is another stupid or crazy letter. You want to hear something crazy? I'm afraid to go to sleep . . . I dream about suicide, drugs and cops ... A couple of nights ago. I dreamt I was in love with the Devil ... I am scared. I really do feel like killing myself but I don't want you or anyone to hate me. I need help. ”This high school student is receiving the help she needed. The south suburban police youthofficer who received this letter in December, 1986, from a student at the school where he was assigned helped her get counselingShe has since moved from the area, “and so far she’s still with us,” the officer reports.SHE AND some friends had been “dabbling” in Satanism, according tothe officer. But other south suburban youngsters haven’t been so lucky. At least one suspected Crete-area dabbler committed suicide last year, said Crete Police Chief Michael Seibert. He played “Dungeons and Dragons,” a fantasy game featuring demons, dungeon masters and dragon slayers that can be played over long periods of time.WHEN THE “game” became too much, authorities believe, this youthstood in the path of a fast-moving Union Pacific freight train.“He just stood out there, Seibertsaid. “It was incredible. The engineer said the victim made no attempt toavoid being hit.”During the past year, the mutilation of a deer had Seibert and other officials bewildered. The dead deer could have been a road kill, he admitted. But it was no accident that theanimal’s feet were surgically removed, the chief said.“YOU DON’T want to be an alarmist,” he said. “But weird is weird. We re all aware of weird. We just have to tie it all together.” Animal and human body parts, particularly finger bones and internal organs, are believed to play an important role in satanic rituals.A few years ago, Richton Park police investigating a case of aggravated criminal sexual assault found a vacant apartment that could have been sheltered some sort of ritualistic behavior, according to Police Chief Jim Klaman.Police found a mysterious collection of animal parts, hair and trinkets bagged and nailed to the wall in the apartment.“WAS IT really some kind of ritual?” Klaman asked “We thought so. but we still aren’t sure of the signtfi-(Please turn to Page A-6)BeelzebubSatan? The message is certainlynot sure if this kind of graffiti found in the village last year represents true satanic dabbling, or just strung out kid with a spray paint can.” (Star photo by Todd Panagopoulos)some
