12 HERALD-STAR Wednesday, May 15, 1985 WELLSBURG — In one of the largest turnouts in a city election in nearly a decade, city voters in Tuesday’s non partisan primary ousted 4th Ward Councilwoman incumbent Bernice Cun ningham and gave Eugene Eloesser an overwhelming vote in his bid for the police chief's post. Six candidates split the vote for the police chief nomination but Elcesser was an out-front victor with 402 unof ficial votes. His closest challenger, former mayor Bill Williams, garnered 226 votes. Elcesser and Williams will meet in the June election. In his first bid for public office, Donald Mechling tallied 187 votes in the chief's race. Voters showed their support of in cumbent Mayor Anthony Cipriani by giving him an unofficial 166-vote margin over Michael Traubert in his bid for the mayor’s seat in council. Traubert mounted an intensive cam paign for the post and edged Cipriani out in the city’s 1st Ward, 93 votes to 82. However, Cipriani gained strength in the other wards to marshall a comman ding lead. The third contender, Betty Lazear Hall, received 150 votes. The 4th Ward race in June pits two newcomers to the city political arena. George Givens was the high vote getter with 84 votes and Ronald Griffith second with 66 votes. Incumbent Bernice Cunningham tallied 33 votes in her bid for a second four-year term. In a contested race in the 3rd Ward, incumbent Dan Cipoletti was renominated and will go against Randy Fletcher in June. Steve Robinson, a newcomer to the city political scene, was eliminated in that race. Cipoletti’s lead over Fletcher was nearly 2-1 as the incumbent received 166 votes and his opponent in the June election tallied 87 votes. In the 2nd Ward, John Vargo bested incumbent Joe McAllister by a 114-vote margin. They will meet in June. Both candidates for 1st Ward council will go to the general election. Joe En nis showed a 21-vote margin over Merle Fletcher. Incumbent Collector-Treasurer Agnes Harvey was the big vote- getter of the day as she tallied 867 votes while challenger Rebecca Adams received 291. City Clerk Billie Jean Robinson received 860 complimentary votes in her unopposed bid for election for an unexpired term as clerk. Mrs. Robinson was appointed to fill the clerk’s post after the death of Harriett Lewis. Here are the unofficial results of Tuesday’s non-partisan primary. MAYOR Anthony Cipriani..................
