A neighborhood type country club operation in southeast Joplin is moving forward as citizens have formed the Rosedale Com munity Association to finance a swimming pool and neighborhood community center. Never before in modern times in Joplin has a group of citizens decided to bypass the city council and bond election system for pub lic improvements, in favor of paying their own way. Mrs. Robert Moyer, 2727 Ohio avenue, publicity chairman for the new association, franchised by the state of Missouri, said memberships will be sold start ing Friday, with a goal of around $100,000 to finance a swimming pool and community center for adults and children. An option has been obtained on five acres of land at Twenty-fourth street and Patterson avenue. The officers of the Rosedale Community Association are: Jo seph Zuzul, 2705 Michigan ave nue, president; Maurice Spidle, 2615 Michigan avenue, secretary; Merrell Jenkins, 2722 Wisconsin avenue, vice president, and Rob ert Moyer, 2727 Ohio avenue, treasurer. The association boundaries are Twentieth street on the north, Thirty-fifth street on the south, Highview avenue on the east and Missouri avenue on the west. The association will sell two types of family memberships. One is for unlimited use of the swim ming pool with an initial fee of $100 and annual dues of $30. The second type family membership which includes use of the swim ming pool and the clubhouse (community center facilities) has an initial fee of $150 and annual dues of $35. Zuzul said arrangements have been made with the First State Bank of Joplin to finance any membership so the initial outlay can be paid out over a one-year period. Under present plans, the club house or neighborhood commu nity center, (the exact name of the facility has not been deter mined) will have a basement with special equipment for chil dren and teenagers and the main floor will be a meeting place for adults and room for card parties and other events. Zuzul said three bids have been received for the construction but due to the wide variance in the bids, no decision has been made as yet. It is estimated that the cost of the swimming pool and clubhouse building will run ap proximately $100,000. He said residents of the area who want to pay their member ship fee now may do so by con tacting one of the four officers of the association. A house-to-house drive to sell memberships will begin Monday night. Residents of the area earlier this year had considered asking the city council to call a special bond election to finance construc tion of the swimming pool since the southeast part of the city is the only area where there is no city swimming pool. However, when the needs of the city parks department were brought up and consideration, given for a major bond issue to finance park im provements too, the citizens in the southeast part of the city felt that they could do their own fi nancing and proceeded to form a corporation, approved by the Sec retary of State, and the work of selling memberships is now u der way.
