Tragedy Is Enacted Near Corner Of North Fourth and Wayne Streets At 9:30 O'clock This Morning—Two As sailants Seen Running Firem Scene— One Suspect Held. John Barber, 40 years old, of Olean, was shot and fatally , wounded by two strange men at 9:30 o'clock this morning on Wayne street near the corner of North Fourth street. John Tiber, 25 years old, is being held by police as a suspect in the shooting. Barber, according to police, was confronted near the corner of Fourth and Wayne streets by two young men, thought by police to be Italians, who emptied the contents of two .32 calibre Smith and Wesson revolvers and a double bar reled shotgun into the body of Barber. The miscreants then dropped their guns and fled. Seven of the bullets took effect in Barber’s brain. He was rushed to the Clinic hospital, but died five minutes after being brought to the hospital. Tiber, who was picked up at noon in the vicinity of the Empire Mills near the Erie railroad tracks, was acting suspi ciously, police say. He was brought to the police station and held pending his identification, SAW ASSAILANTS RUN. After the shooting of Barber several persons saw the men leav ing the scene at a run. They were described as being about 25 or 30 years old, wearing blue suits and light bets. One was said to have been about five feet six inches tall and heavily built, the other alter and of lighter build. = This description —very nearly Ats Tiber, who was dressed in 2 blue suits and wore a brown soft hat, also included in the description of some people who saw the men boning. ‘An inquest into the shooting will be freld some time this after noon, and efforts to identify Tiber as one of the men leaving the scene of the shooting are being made by police. Police were notified of the shoot ing by persons in the vicinity who a d been aroused by the sounds of the shots. Arriving on the scene, they found Barber lying by the side- walk, shot through the lead. ‘The guns used in the shootings were fouund on the grass by his side. One of the guns had been fired six times, the other five. ‘The shote gun used was found by police on North Fourth street, around the corner from the sqoue of the shooting, ‘no empty shells and several that had not been fired were found with the san Olean police immediately took up he trail of the murderers and Sher iff Knight, who was In the city at t the time, wares notified. The trail let north on North Fourth street to Coleman, where the men turned and crossed the Pennsylvania railroad tracks and climbed through a freight train standing on the crossing. Shoes then went North on the tracks to a point where the railroad crosses Fourth street and continued along Fourth. 1 Maves Ingersoll, manager of the miseline station of the Standard Oil Company on Fourth street, and sev eral clerks in the gasoline station atd the two amen and noted t heir suspicious actions. They were evidently out of breath from ran ching, according to the men in the gasoline station, and were continu ally looking back over their shoul ders. From this point the men were not noticed by any of the people living in the vivini The officers spread out and thor oughly entered the houses in the dis trict. Several buildings which po lice thought might be a hiding place for the fugitives were searched with out results. Farber, who is short and swarthy, was an Italian. He is well known about the city. He recently returned from July, where it is said he has a wife and several children ring. Police found a 32 calibre re solver on Barber ,after the shoot ing. The gun was in his right trouser pocket. No shots had been fired from it lately as all the chambers were found loaded. When brought to the hospital the wounded man was beyond medical aid, hospital authorities lay. The bullets in his brain caused such a pressure that he did not regain consciousness and died without making a statement. Dre TG. Burdick, coroner, was ensured this afternoon in perform ing an autopsy on the body of Bare Wer, which hd been taken to the Heenan undertaking parlors. At the time of gots 9 press the cor oner had not made a statement on the findings of the autopsy. Several otter wands besides those made in the head were found on Harber. A shot had taken effect were the left ankle and another in the left leg near the knee. A third Shot entered the body in the ab dom, emerging out at the lock. Otto Sparmahers, a fireman on the Swork train in Desnsylvania Tail- rod Company yards, was brought ‘to the police station shortly after inoon to Hentify the suspect held ‘in connection with the shooting. Sparmberg, who is claimed by po lice to have seen the termination of the shooting, said that Tiher looked “very amid like“ one of the men who shot and fatally wounded Bar- Uber,
