The county school board met in reg ular session with the following mem bers present: J. Gates, Chairman; F. H. Tucker and J. O. Brown, with W. M. Rowlett, secretary. Minutes of last regular meeting, April 1h, were read and on motion approved. Prof. W. H. Turner, principal of the county high school, came before the board and made a verbal statement, also suggestions, regarding the pres ent work and progress of the school. On motion, the action of Professor Turner in engaging Prof Jno. A. Thax ton, state inspector of county high schools, to deliver the commencement address during the closing exercises of the county high school was approv ed. Messrs. C. H. Davis and McDuffey, a committee representing the patrons and citizens of the town of Manatee, came before the board and presented the matter of erecting a school build in said town; after a discussion of matter in detail, a motion was made, seconded and passed, that the board would erect in the town of Man atee a suitable brick building as soon as the financial conditions of the school fund would permit. Chairman Gates and Dr. Brown voting in the affirmative, and Mr. Tucker voting in the negative, submitting an explana tion of his vote as follows: “Inas much as the new county high school building has ample room to accom modate all high grade pupils from both Manatee and Bradentown, also being centrally located between the two towns, and each have buildings sufficient for accommodating all the lower grades, therefore, I vote against the motion.” The matter of putting an addition to the Homewood school was referred to Mr. Tucker for investigation. The resignation of Dr. H. Gates, a member of the board of trustees of the Manatee school, was presented and read, and upon motion, the board de clined to accept said resignation. By motion, the secretary was in structed to purchase a sufficient num ber of desks for the Sandy school, the same to be paid for out of the special tax fund of the Sandy district. The following resolution was pre sented and read: “Whereas, inas much as the printing of the school board has been awarded to the Mana tee River Journal for a number of years, be it resolved that the printing for ensuing year be awarded to the Bradentown Herald.” Messrs. Gates and Brown voted for the resolution, Mr. Tucker voted against it,explain iing his vote as follows: “The object of the board should be to have their proceedings reach as many readers as possible, and as there are other papers in the county that have a larger cir culation, hence, I vote against the res olution. Committees representing the Boards of Trade of Bradentown and Sarasota, The Parents Teachers’ Association, and the Friday Literary Club of Bra dentown and Manatee, appeared be fore the board with petitions request ing that the departments of Domestic Science, Manual Training and Agri culture be continued in the high schools of the county. After a full and free discussion of the question, the board assured the committees that the matter should receive due considera tion. A committee of school patrons and citizens of West Bradentown present ed a petition with plans for a school’ building, and requested the Board to ‘make an appropriation sufficient to erect a school building in accordance with the plans presented, on the lot where the present building stands. On e motion, final action on the matter was ‘postponed for future action. The Board then adjourned until 8 o'clock Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning, 8 o'clock, the Board reconvened with all members present. By motion, action on bids for the purchase of the old Cortez school lot was deferred until the next regular meeting of the Board.” The following statement from Chairman Gates was presented and read: Gentlemen:—At the beginning of our term of office we found it im peratively necessary to borrow money for the purpose of paying off bills ac cumulated and for the purpose of re deeming outstanding warrants issued for erecting school buildings. Being desirous of getting funds at a lower rate than had been offered from sev eral sources, and after considerable delay, in attempts to effect deals with different parties, I find it evident that we cannot secure the needed funds at a better rate than offered by Mr. Duke M. Farson, of Chicago, therefore I recommend that the proposition, as shown by letters and telegrams on file ,from Mr. Farson be accepted, with the proposition of Contractor I. F. Jones to take funding warrants at 6 per cent interest at par or face value, to cover indebtedness due him. By motion, the statement from Mr. Gates, and suggestions therein, were accepted, and the same ordered a part of the minutes. By motion, resolutions passed by the board January 25 and March ‘th, 1913, relative to borrowing money by issuing funding warrants, were re scinded; whereupon Mr. Tucker offer ed a resolution, the same to be made a part of the proceedings and records of the board, relative to and necessary for the issuance of funding warrants to the amount of $60,000 for the pur pose of paying outstanding indebted ness incurred by the construction of school buildings. On motion of Mr. Tucker, seconded by Mr. Brown, the resolution was passed, and the chair man and secretary were instructed to carry out the purposes of the resolu tion.
