Tiip. Elephant.—Tho Zanesville Courier has the following touching incident of the sagacity and atlbction of the elephant. Hannibal lias killed several persons, which made thorn so cautions when his keeper was disabled :“ As tho menagerie and circus which spent the last winter In this city was going from Brownsville to Newark, on Saturday last, tho keeper of the ellphant ‘Hannibal’ full from his horse in an epileptic fit. Those who wcro in the vicinity could do nothing for tho poor fellow, from fear of the elephant, who has been In a rather bad humor for some time; for, indeed, he would not niloir them to come near. , His canine compauion, however, licked his keeper’s face continually, uml 'llunnibnr made several efforts to set him on his feet, by placing his trunk under him, raising him up, Ac.“Fearing that his serene highness might become enraged at this statu of tilings, efforts wero made to get tho wagons, cages, Ate., out of his way. FSually, one of tho men, who had somo experience in managing him, succeeded in getting him to lie down, uud got upou him, when he wns chained to u tree near by until his ordinary kccpor was eared for. Then, by the usual means, ho was sufllclently subdued to allow iiim to be loosed with safety, and tho uortugo moved oil. The alfeetion shown hy tho sagacious animals—the elephant and tho mantiff--for their afflicted keeper gives additional force to the adage tliat “a rough exterior often hides a tender heart.’ ”
