Submitted photoPostcard from the PastFor over 10 years, children of the 1950s could enjoy the thrill of catching a Ulunker” every summer at Rhinelander’s fishing pond, located near the edge of the Wisconsin River behind today’s Emporium Plus on Courtney Street. In 1951, the Jaycees cut trees and removed brush in preparation for digging the pond, which was in the shape of a Hodag. The state fish hatchery in Woodruff was in charge of stocking, in some years a weekly occurrence and often involved seining area lakes. It was estimated that 3,000-4,000 children under the age of 14 were able to use their cane poles on the small body of water each summer. The pond served several purposes — children had a place to fish and gained an understanding of conservancy, and with the removal of the thick grove of trees, the city was able to get rid of the “hobo jungle” which had been a draw for transients since the turn of the century.
