R-Farmington, has told the Maine House of Representatives Dec. 21 should be observed annually asmaker day makes solons/Chester Greenwood Day because of his particular contribution to the state — the invention of the earmuff.Most House members agreed and voted initial passage of a bill directing such a commemorationGreenwood's Champion Ear Protectors Co.. founded afterdaythe inventor obtained a patent on the device at the age of 19, earned Farmington the title “Earmuff Capital of the World The plant closed shortly after Greenwood died in 1937, 'aged 79Some members expressed admiration for the “father ofthe earmuff for personalreasons.“I voted for this bill because earmuffs have always kept my ears warm, Rep Stephen R Gould. R-Stillwater, said “When 1 was a child my ears stuck out so far I was six years old before my parents knew whether 1 would walk or fly.Honoring Greenwood on the first day of winter will not cost the state “one cent, and it will jenerate a lot of valuable avorable publicity for Maine's winter recreation industry,Morton said “I do not support frivolous legislation. said Rep Albert Cote, D-Lewiston “No man could be more deserving of recognition than his symbol ofYankee ingenuity, this manwho embodied the independent Maine genius.”But Rep Uaurier G Riron, D-Lewiston, objected to discussion of the bill, let alone its passage, as a waste of taxpayers' money.
