Defiance county's champion ship Ney club advanced to the second round of the district class B baseball tournament by blank ing Lima St. Girard, 5 to 0, Thur sday behind the effective two hit hurling of Ned Garver. New Knoxville beat Stryker, 6 to 4, in the other game of the after noon. The tourney tilts were played on Jewell high school’s diamond where the meet will continue until the flooded Maumee and Auglaize rivers descend from Kingsbury Park. Vaughnsville, the defending champion, was to get into action this afternoon meeting Lima St John at 4 o'clock (EWT). Lyons will play Bluffton at 6. FIVE GAMES SATURDAY Efforts will be made to bring the five-game Saturday schedule to Kingsbury with a little coop eration from the rivers. The games are: Lima St. Rose vs. Van Wert county, 10 a. m. (EWT); Delphtes St. John vs. St. Henry, 12 noon; Ridgeville vs. Holland, 2 p. m.; Ney vs. New Knoxville, 4 p. m.; Allen county vs. Vau ghnsville-Lima St. John winner, G. Garver, Ney’s hurler, was in excellent form. Striking out 14 while walking only three, he held St. Girard hitless until the fifth when Hilliard singled. The Lima third baseman, batting seventh, also made the only other hit Garver allowed, a single in the seventh inning. St. Girard went down in order in the first, sec ond, fourth and fifth frames and aside from their two hits had the ball out of the infield only once. Garver's strikeouts ac counted for two-thirds of the putouts and he got assists on three of the remaining seven outs, this having a hand in 17 of 21 Ney pounded out eight hits off J. Walsh. They scored first in the third frame when Garver reached base on an error and scored on Leonard Jesse's hit. Two more runs came across in the fourth after two were out, a walk to Billow and hits by Howard Zipfel and Calvin Ester doing the damage. TWO RUNS IN 7TH ester singled to open the sev enth and final frame. Garver reached base on an error. May nard Crites forced Ester , but Phelps to Phill Pittsburgh, May 14—Gordon (Babe) Phelps, Pittsburgh Pirate catcher last year, hag been sold to the Philadelphia Phillies for an undisclosed sum. Phelps, 35, came to the Bucs, along with three other Brooklyn Dodger players, for Arky Vaughan. Boland’s hit drove in two more runs. After Stryker had scored three runs in the first inning, New Knoxville came back with four in the second and added two in the third to sew up the victory. Stryker’s other run was in the fifth.
